Education Overview
The main focus of UWEB Education and Outreach is to mesh with
one of the overall missions of the center: to fully integrate
research, education and technology transfer and outreach. Guided
by the UWEB Education Committee, UWEB's education program is
the focal point that enhances the research experience of our
undergraduates, graduate students and post docs.
The goal of UWEB's education program is to:
- Graduate a diverse group of students as interdisciplinary
engineering leaders, educators and entrepreneurs who are more
effective in a global economy
- Integrate next-generation engineered systems research into
new curriculum development
- Influence a change in the culture of the learning and teaching
of engineering at the University of Washington and nationally
through new courses, certificate programs and seminars
- Increase the diversity of graduating students and the engineering
workforce through outreach to predominantly minority institutions
- Impact K-12 education and contribute to curriculum enrichment
by sharing the excitement of science and engineering education
with diverse populations of K-12 teachers and students
- Nurture an active involvement of industry partners in all
aspects of education
- Disseminate education innovations nationally using multimedia
and WWW as delivery mechanisms
The primary objective of our education programs is to ensure
that our students receive an excellent grounding in the cross-disciplinary,
state of the art research towards creating biomaterials that
heal. Programs extend across the three
thrust areas and involve graduate and undergraduate students
and post docs. UWEB education efforts ensure the Center's commitment
to graduate students who have a holistic training, which includes
creativity, ethics, entrepreneurship and teamwork. In our outreach
efforts, the focus is the establishment of lasting relationships
between UWEB and other University of Washington and national
programs. UWEB is a key player in bringing science and engineering
education to Puget Sound area public schools. Outreach activities
to a diverse population of K-12 students and teachers actively
involve students, faculty, our industry partners and staff.
