Science for Success (SFS)

The SFS program is designed to encourage students toward a personal commitment to a career in science and to acquaint them with exciting research in the biological sciences, medicine, and the environment at the University of Washington campus. The Monday through Friday program activities include: short field trips to wetlands, the arboretum, UW's Pack Forest, Seattle Tilth, the UW botany greenhouse, the UW herbarium, the School of Fisheries, the Woodland Park Zoo and local marine habitats. Hands-on laboratory experience with some main themes drawn from human biology, an assortment of biomaterials, as well as a rigorous molecular biology component will be conducted. The program funds student supplies, lunch and a stipend but does not pay for transportation or lodging.**

Interested students who are:

  • Underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged,
  • US. Citizens or have a permanent resident visa from the Seattle area.
  • The SFS program will NOT be offered in 2009.

The Science for Success Program is a "trainee," program. Therefore, the ideal candidate must be dedicated to fulfilling the rigorous schedule and academic demands of the program which involves being in class 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fridays are set aside for field trips and/or for students to complete weekly written projects either individually or in-groups. Each student is paid a stipend based on actual hours attended plus lunch money. Students wanting to apply for the program must submit a complete application file. All materials must be sent in one envelope, which contains:

- The "SFS" Program application

  • Typed 400 word essay
  • Official sealed transcript reflecting high school course work
  • Two (2) SFS recommendation forms: one from applicant's high school math or
    science teacher & one from a person of your choice (i.e. employer/guidance
    counselor).
