Cardiovascular Bioengineering Training Grant (CBTG)
The Cardiovascular Bioengineering Training Grant (CBTG) is a National Research Service Award (NRSA) Pre- and Post-doctoral Institutional Training Program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). This program is has been directed by Dr. James Bassingthwaighte (Bioengineering) for the past 27 years. Dr. Regnier (Bioengineering) will become director of the program on July 1, 2004, and at that time the institutional support for the program will switch from NHBLI to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). The goal of this program is to provide trainees with research opportunities of a cross-disciplinary nature, focused on applying engineering and quantitative approaches to cardiovascular research. Training opportunities will focus on four specific areas that are identified as established strengths at the University of Washington: Computational and Integrative Bioengineering, Diagnostic Imaging, Integrated Physiological Function, and Therapeutic Technology Development.
The CBTG currently funds 2 pre- and 4 post-doctoral trainee positions. In July 2004 funding is tentatively planned for 6 pre- and 2 post-doctoral trainee positions. Most trainees are appointed for two years of support, pending continued National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding and satisfactory progress. The program allows a maximum of 36 months of support and a minimum appointment is for 12 months of continuous support. Applicants will be expected to have completed a broad and demanding program in some combination of biology, engineering, physics, chemistry and mathematics prior to acceptance into the training program. Pre-doctoral candidates should have completed the majority of their coursework prior to submitting an application. Eligible candidates for this position must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States.
Applicants should e-mail their resume, list of publications, and contact details of three references to: Dr. Michael Regnier, University of Washington, Department of Bioengineering, mregnier@u.washinton.edu. Currently, there are no available trainee positions for the NHLBI-sponsored program. Applications for the NIBIB-sponsored program will be accepted once final word of funding has been received.
