Advisor: Buddy Ratner

Department/status: Research Scientist, Bioengineering, UWEB, Ratner group

Project overview:

  1. Development of mechanical gradient polyurethane films covalently bonded to the titanium surface and their nanomechanical characterization to improve stress distribution in artificial hip implants (in collaboration with UW Chemical Engineering Department, Overney group)
  2. Synthesis of poly(ether urethanes) incorporating long alkyl side-chains with pendant carboxyl groups and study of the effect of composition and the polymer surface chemistry on protein adsorption for improvements in blood compatibility (in collaboration with UW Chemical Engineering, Horbett group)
  3. Development of a method and composition for the polyurethane surface modification by covalently bonding of PEG-dendrimers to improve antibacterial characteristics of surfaces (in collaboration with University of Connecticut Health center, Bryers group)
  4. Development of novel biohybrid material based on the new class of polypeptide-nonpeptide linear segmented poly(urethane urea) block copolymers consisting of lysine-content hard segment and two types of polypeptide segments possessing collagen-like and elastin-like structures.
