Thrust Three: Healing and Medicine

Thrust 3 at UWEB - Healing and Medicine - has four major goals:

  1. to develop in vivo testbeds for ERC engineered systems
  2. to facilitate preclinical animal testing of novel materials and engineered systems
  3. to develop in vitro human organotypic testbeds for ERC engineered systems
  4. to provide clinical perspective on Thrust 1 and Thrust 2 projects/directions

In the larger sense, Thrust 3 research efforts rely on the successful marriage of identified biological principles from Thrust 2 to advanced materials concepts developed in Thrust 1. Thrust 3 research is focused on engineered devices for application in four major clinical areas: cardiovascular, oral/dental, bone, skin, and limb. Several novel in vivo and organ culture testbeds have been developed, and are being utilized for material and device assessment.
