Computing Help

My files are incompatible with a pc...

Example, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.  Windows needs to have a 3 letter extension after the filename to recognize which application it should open the document with. Make sure you enable the "Append File Extension" checkmark. This option can be found in the "SAVE AS" dialog box. If problems persist, you may try to save the file as an older format.

My computer is acting strange

First thing to do is Save everything, then restart your computer!  Strangely enough this fixes about 90% of the problems, otherwise you should report your problem to the tech staff.

I think I have a virus:

Make sure you have the latest virus definitions. Although machines are set up to retrieve the latest definitions automatically, this may not always work flawlessly. To update definitions "by hand":

Windows:
Doubleclick on VirusScan Console in the windows taskbar to the left of the clock. Doubleclick AutoUpdate. Click the "Run Now" button. The virus definitions will be downloaded and applied.

Macs:
Doubleclick your Virex application. Click the eUpdate button toward the top middle of the screen. The virus definitions will be downloaded and updated.

My Mac is running out of memory! (applicable to OS9 apps only)

If a program continues to crash, increase the amount of memory it takes when it runs.  EXAMPLE, Microsoft Word.  You will have to locate the APPLICATION on the hard drive, not the alias.  The program cannot be running for this to work. Once you've located the application, and have clicked on it (one click not a double click!).  Then click on FILE from the menu up top, then click on GET INFO then click on  MEMORY.   Change the MAX memory to at least a few megabytes more than the default amount.
